# M48 Hex Nuts, Grade C Dimensions

Nuts · ISO 4034

Controlling dimensions to ISO 4034, with spanner or drive size and tightening torque.

M48 Hex Nuts, Grade C dimensions to ISO 4034: width across flats (spanner size) 75 mm, nut height 38 mm, coarse thread pitch 5 mm.

- **Width across flats (spanner size):** 75 mm
- **Nut height:** 38 mm
- **Coarse thread pitch:** 5 mm

Figures are nominal values from the governing standard. Confirm against the tolerance class for your application before machining or ordering.

The M48 size of Hex Nuts, Grade C is dimensioned by ISO 4034. The table below gives the dimensional row from the standard, followed by the drive and the installation notes for this type.

Values are taken from the governing standard rather than from a general machine-thread table, because this type is not selected on one.

## M48 Dimensional Row (ISO 4034)

| Size | Pitch (mm) | Width across flats s (mm) | Width across corners e min (mm) | Nut height m (mm) | Product grade | Reference standard |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| M48 | 5.0 | 75.0 | 82.6 | 38.0 | Grade C | ISO 4034 / DIN 555 |

## Spanner & Drive for M48 Hex Nuts, Grade C

M48 Hex Nuts, Grade C have a width across flats of 75.0 mm — fit a 75.0 mm open-ended spanner or socket. Prefer a 6-point socket over a 12-point: it loads the corners of the 75.0 mm hex far less, which matters on plated heads and on anything that will be re-used. Set preload with a torque wrench rather than by arm.

## Tightening Torque for M48

| Class 8.8 (dry, ~µ 0.125) | ≈ Nm |
| --- | --- |
| Class 10.9 (dry, ~µ 0.125) | ≈ Nm |
| Class 12.9 (dry, ~µ 0.125) | ≈ Nm |

Indicative dry-joint values. Lubrication can lower the required torque by 15–25%. Always confirm against the joint design, especially when going up a strength class.

## Proof Load & Strength for M48

Nuts are graded to ISO 898-2 by the proof load the nut itself will hold (classes 04, 05, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12), not by the 8.8 / 10.9 / 12.9 scale used for bolts. A class-8 nut is the correct mate for a class-8.8 bolt, and the joint is designed on the bolt, so no bolt-tension figure is quoted here.

## Installation Tips for M48 Hex Nuts, Grade C

- Use a 6-point socket where access allows — 12-point sockets are more prone to rounding the corners on smaller sizes.
- A flanged head is its own washer. Adding a flat one under it lifts the serrations clear of the surface they are meant to bite, which is the whole locking mechanism gone.
- At M48 the stretch in the bolt becomes the controlling factor — for critical joints, use angle-controlled or stretch-controlled tightening instead of pure torque.

## Mating Parts for M48

Pair M48 with the matching M48 bolt or screw, plus a M48 flat washer where required to distribute load on softer materials.

## Applications & Industries for M48 Hex Nuts

Hex Nuts are bought for a small number of well-defined jobs. These are the ones we ship them for. Stocked from M5 to M48.

### Industries that specify Hex Nuts

- **Maintenance & MRO:** Replacements matched to the existing bolt class, thread and finish.
- **Building services:** Threaded rod, channel and suspension assemblies.
- **Machine building & OEM:** The clamping counter-face on studs and bolts throughout an assembly.
- **Steel fabrication:** Bolted structural and frame connections.
- **Automotive & transport:** Vibration-prone joints where the locking type is specified on the drawing.

### Typical applications

- joints re-torqued at a service interval
- completing a bolted joint on a stud, rod or bolt
- locking an adjustment so it cannot drift

### Service conditions to specify against

- **Marine and coastal:** Available in A4 (316) stainless for chloride exposure — coastal structures, pool halls, water treatment and deck hardware, where A2 will eventually pit.
- **High load:** Supplied in ISO 898-1 property classes, so the joint can be designed to a stated proof load and tightened to a calculated torque rather than by feel.
- **Match the class:** A nut below the bolt property class strips before the bolt reaches its own limit — pair class 8 nuts with 8.8 bolts, class 10 with 10.9.

Inside the plant

## Manufactured in our own plant

This part is cold-formed, threaded, heat-treated and finished in-house. The stages below are where its class and finish are actually decided.

1. ![Wire rod feeding into a cold heading machine](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/09-wire-rod-feed-cold-heading-machine.webp) 01 **Cold heading** Wire rod is drawn to size and cold-formed into blanks. Forming rather than cutting keeps the grain flow continuous around the head, which is where a bolt is most likely to fail. Head dimensions and under-head radius checked at set-up and per shift.
2. ![Thread rolling machine producing bolt threads](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/03-thread-rolling-machine-bolt-production.webp) 02 **Thread rolling** Threads are rolled between hardened dies rather than cut. Rolled threads are stronger in fatigue than cut threads and hold pitch and flank angle far more consistently across a batch. Go / no-go ring gauges to ISO 965 tolerance class 6g.
3. ![Baskets of bolts staged for heat treatment](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/05-heat-treatment-baskets-black-bolts.webp) 03 **Heat treatment** Quench-and-temper brings carbon and alloy steel to the property class ordered — 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9 — with the furnace charge tracked so a finished lot can be traced back to it. Core hardness and tensile tested per lot to ISO 898-1.
4. ![Zinc plated bolts in a treatment basket](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/23-zinc-plated-bolts-treatment-basket.webp) 04 **Surface treatment** Zinc, zinc-nickel, hot-dip galvanizing, black oxide, phosphate and Dacromet, selected against the service environment rather than against the price list. Coating thickness and neutral salt spray hours to ISO 9227.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the coarse-thread pitch of M48 for Hex Nuts, Grade C?

For M48 the standard coarse pitch is 5 mm — this is the value used for Hex Nuts, Grade C.

### What clearance and tapping drill suit M48?

Use a 52 mm clearance hole (ISO 273 medium) for through-fixing, or a 43 mm tapping drill for a coarse M48 thread.

### Should M48 Hex Nuts, Grade C be tightened by torque or by angle?

For critical structural joints at M48, angle-controlled or stretch-controlled tightening is more repeatable than pure torque — the friction scatter at large diameters can dominate the torque signal.

### What grip range is typical for M48 structural bolts?

Grip ranges are highly application-dependent at M48. As a guide, choose a length that gives at least 1× the thread diameter engagement in the nut plus 2–3 thread pitches projecting.
