# M5 Hex Nut Dimensions

Nuts · GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032

Controlling dimensions to GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032, with spanner or drive size and tightening torque.

M5 Hex Nut dimensions to GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032: width across flats (spanner size) 8 mm, nut height 4.7 mm, coarse thread pitch 0.8 mm. Tighten to approximately 5.9 Nm at property class 8.8 in a dry, as-supplied condition.

- **Width across flats (spanner size):** 8 mm
- **Nut height:** 4.7 mm
- **Coarse thread pitch:** 0.8 mm
- **Tightening torque (class 8.8):** 5.9 Nm

Figures are nominal values from the governing standard. Confirm against the tolerance class for your application before machining or ordering.

The M5 size of Hex Nut is dimensioned by GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032. The table below gives the dimensional row from the standard, followed by the drive and the installation notes for this type.

Values are taken from the governing standard rather than from a general machine-thread table, because this type is not selected on one.

## M5 Dimensional Row (GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032)

| Size | Pitch (mm) | Width across flats s (mm) | Width across corners e (mm) | Nut height m (mm) | Reference standard |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| M5 | 0.8 | 8.0 | 8.79 | 4.7 | ISO 4032 / GB/T 6170 |

## Spanner & Drive for M5 Hex Nut — GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032 (Series 059)

M5 Hex Nut — GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032 (Series 059) have a width across flats of 8.0 mm — fit a 8.0 mm open-ended spanner or socket. Prefer a 6-point socket over a 12-point: it loads the corners of the 8.0 mm hex far less, which matters on plated heads and on anything that will be re-used. Set preload with a torque wrench rather than by arm.

## Tightening Torque for M5

| Class 8.8 (dry, ~µ 0.125) | ≈ 5.9 Nm |
| --- | --- |
| Class 10.9 (dry, ~µ 0.125) | ≈ 8.7 Nm |
| Class 12.9 (dry, ~µ 0.125) | ≈ 10 Nm |

Indicative dry-joint values. Lubrication can lower the required torque by 15–25%. Always confirm against the joint design, especially when going up a strength class.

## Proof Load & Strength for M5

Nuts are graded to ISO 898-2 by the proof load the nut itself will hold (classes 04, 05, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12), not by the 8.8 / 10.9 / 12.9 scale used for bolts. A class-8 nut is the correct mate for a class-8.8 bolt, and the joint is designed on the bolt, so no bolt-tension figure is quoted here.

## Installation Tips for M5 Hex Nut — GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032 (Series 059)

- Use a 6-point socket where access allows — 12-point sockets are more prone to rounding the corners on smaller sizes.
- A flanged head is its own washer. Adding a flat one under it lifts the serrations clear of the surface they are meant to bite, which is the whole locking mechanism gone.
- At M5 the joint is sensitive to over-torque — use a torque-limiting driver and check the head doesn't bury into a softer counterpart.

## When to Step Up or Down from M5

When the joint preload approaches the proof load of M5 class 8.8, step up to M6 class 8.8 (or move to M5 class 10.9). When the joint is over-specified, M4 often saves weight and cost without losing the safety margin.

## Applications & Industries for M5 Hex Nut

Where Hex Nut are used, and what decides the specification in each case. Stocked from M3 to M36.

### Industries that specify Hex Nut

- **Steel fabrication:** Bolted structural and frame connections.
- **Automotive & transport:** Vibration-prone joints where the locking type is specified on the drawing.
- **Maintenance & MRO:** Replacements matched to the existing bolt class, thread and finish.
- **Building services:** Threaded rod, channel and suspension assemblies.
- **Machine building & OEM:** The clamping counter-face on studs and bolts throughout an assembly.

### Typical applications

- completing a bolted joint on a stud, rod or bolt
- locking an adjustment so it cannot drift
- joints re-torqued at a service interval

### Service conditions to specify against

- **Marine and coastal:** Available in A4 (316) stainless for chloride exposure — coastal structures, pool halls, water treatment and deck hardware, where A2 will eventually pit.
- **High load:** Supplied in ISO 898-1 property classes, so the joint can be designed to a stated proof load and tightened to a calculated torque rather than by feel.
- **Match the class:** A nut below the bolt property class strips before the bolt reaches its own limit — pair class 8 nuts with 8.8 bolts, class 10 with 10.9.

## Manufactured in our own plant

This part is cold-formed, threaded, heat-treated and finished in-house. The stages below are where its class and finish are actually decided.

1. ![Wire rod feeding into a cold heading machine](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/09-wire-rod-feed-cold-heading-machine.webp) 01 **Cold heading** Wire rod is drawn to size and cold-formed into blanks. Forming rather than cutting keeps the grain flow continuous around the head, which is where a bolt is most likely to fail. Head dimensions and under-head radius checked at set-up and per shift.
2. ![Thread rolling machine producing bolt threads](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/03-thread-rolling-machine-bolt-production.webp) 02 **Thread rolling** Threads are rolled between hardened dies rather than cut. Rolled threads are stronger in fatigue than cut threads and hold pitch and flank angle far more consistently across a batch. Go / no-go ring gauges to ISO 965 tolerance class 6g.
3. ![Baskets of bolts staged for heat treatment](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/05-heat-treatment-baskets-black-bolts.webp) 03 **Heat treatment** Quench-and-temper brings carbon and alloy steel to the property class ordered — 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9 — with the furnace charge tracked so a finished lot can be traced back to it. Core hardness and tensile tested per lot to ISO 898-1.
4. ![Zinc plated bolts in a treatment basket](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/23-zinc-plated-bolts-treatment-basket.webp) 04 **Surface treatment** Zinc, zinc-nickel, hot-dip galvanizing, black oxide, phosphate and Dacromet, selected against the service environment rather than against the price list. Coating thickness and neutral salt spray hours to ISO 9227.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the coarse-thread pitch of M5 for Hex Nut — GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032 (Series 059)?

For M5 the standard coarse pitch is 0.8 mm — this is the value used for Hex Nut — GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032 (Series 059).

### What clearance and tapping drill suit M5?

Use a 5.5 mm clearance hole (ISO 273 medium) for through-fixing, or a 4.2 mm tapping drill for a coarse M5 thread.

### Is M5 Hex Nut — GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032 (Series 059) suitable for electronics and small mechanisms?

M5 Hex Nut — GB/T 6170 / ISO 4032 (Series 059) is in the micro range and is widely used in electronics, instrument enclosures and small precision mechanisms. Watch the over-torque margin — micro joints strip easily.

### What's the typical proof load behavior of M5 class 8.8?

Micro-thread joints are sensitive to plastic deformation in the first turn under load — use a torque-limiting driver and check the bearing surface deformation on softer mating materials.
