# DIN 660 Solid Rivets Specification

Rivets · ISO 1051 / DIN 660 / DIN 661

Dimensional table, tolerance classes and the DIN / ISO / ASME parts that supersede or match this standard.

DIN 660 specifies the dimensions and tolerances for solid rivets. The full dimensional table is reproduced below, followed by the DIN, ISO and ASME parts that match or supersede it.

- **Standard:** DIN 660
- **Product:** Solid Rivets
- **Governing standards:** ISO 1051 / DIN 660 / DIN 661

Equivalence between national standards is dimensional, not always metallurgical. Check the property class separately when substituting.

Specification summary of DIN 660 as applied to solid rivets: the dimensions the standard fixes, the full size range supplied, and the related designations commonly cross-referenced.

## DIN 660 — Scope

DIN 660 is "Round head rivets".

Material, property class, surface finish and packaging are governed by separate documents — ISO 898-1 and ISO 898-2 for mechanical property classes, ISO 4042 for electroplated finishes.

## Tolerance & Product Grades

DIN 660 does not divide solid rivets into product grades. Tolerances are given as limits on the individual dimensions in the table.

Where a general-tolerance class is cited on the drawing instead, it applies to the dimensions not otherwise toleranced.

## Equivalent Standards

Where direct equivalents exist (ISO ↔ DIN, ISO ↔ ASME), they are listed on the parent Solid Rivets page.

Always confirm against the dimensions on this page, since some "equivalent" standards differ in tolerances and head geometry.

## Companion Standards

DIN 660 controls only the geometry of solid rivets. The mechanical strength is set by ISO 898-1 (bolts, screws and studs) or ISO 898-2 (nuts); the surface finish is governed by separate finish standards such as ISO 4042 for electroplating. For corrosion testing, the relevant document is ISO 9227 (neutral salt spray).

Custom manufacturing · Made to drawing

## Need a rivet to this standard in a non-standard size?

Parts built to DIN 660 are already in the catalog, so a special is usually a variation on existing tooling rather than a new design — which is what keeps the cost down. Made by cold heading or drawing.

Minimum order from 2,000 pieces; samples within 7 days of drawing approval.

## Applications & Industries

Solid Rivets are bought for a small number of well-defined jobs. These are the ones we ship them for. Stocked from 1.0 to 25.0 (nominal diameter).

### Industries that specify Solid Rivets

- **Consumer goods & toys:** Riveted pivots and permanent light assemblies.
- **Sheet-metal fabrication:** Permanent joints in enclosures, ducting and panels.
- **Transport & bodywork:** Trailer, bus and van panels joined blind from one side.
- **Signage & cladding:** Fast, vibration-resistant fixing of thin material.

### Typical applications

- permanent joints in thin sheet where a threaded fastener would loosen
- blind fixing where only one side can be reached
- riveted pivots that must stay tight but still turn

### Service conditions to specify against

- **Marine and coastal:** Available in A4 (316) stainless for chloride exposure — coastal structures, pool halls, water treatment and deck hardware, where A2 will eventually pit.

### Where to use something else

- Not for a joint that has to come apart in service — removal means drilling the rivet out.

Inside the plant

## Manufactured in our own plant

This part is cold-formed, threaded, heat-treated and finished in-house. The stages below are where its class and finish are actually decided.

1. ![Wire rod feeding into a cold heading machine](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/09-wire-rod-feed-cold-heading-machine.webp) 01 **Cold heading** Wire rod is drawn to size and cold-formed into blanks. Forming rather than cutting keeps the grain flow continuous around the head, which is where a bolt is most likely to fail. Head dimensions and under-head radius checked at set-up and per shift.
2. ![Thread rolling machine producing bolt threads](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/03-thread-rolling-machine-bolt-production.webp) 02 **Thread rolling** Threads are rolled between hardened dies rather than cut. Rolled threads are stronger in fatigue than cut threads and hold pitch and flank angle far more consistently across a batch. Go / no-go ring gauges to ISO 965 tolerance class 6g.
3. ![Baskets of bolts staged for heat treatment](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/05-heat-treatment-baskets-black-bolts.webp) 03 **Heat treatment** Quench-and-temper brings carbon and alloy steel to the property class ordered — 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9 — with the furnace charge tracked so a finished lot can be traced back to it. Core hardness and tensile tested per lot to ISO 898-1.
4. ![Zinc plated bolts in a treatment basket](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/23-zinc-plated-bolts-treatment-basket.webp) 04 **Surface treatment** Zinc, zinc-nickel, hot-dip galvanizing, black oxide, phosphate and Dacromet, selected against the service environment rather than against the price list. Coating thickness and neutral salt spray hours to ISO 9227.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What does DIN 660 specify for Solid Rivets?

DIN 660 specifies the dimensions and tolerances of solid rivets. Material and property class are governed by separate documents.

### Does DIN 660 specify the mechanical strength?

No. DIN 660 controls only the geometry of solid rivets. The mechanical strength is set by ISO 898-1 (bolts, screws and studs) or ISO 898-2 (nuts), and the finish by separate documents.

### Can I substitute DIN 660 for the corresponding DIN standard on a drawing?

On modern drawings the ISO standard is the master reference; the older DIN equivalent is a cross-reference. For most dimensional purposes the parts are interchangeable, but check tolerance grades and the head height — these are the most common points of divergence.

### Which edition of DIN 660 does this table follow?

The table reproduces the dimensions we supply solid rivets to. We do not publish an edition year against it, so where the edition is contractually significant, cite the edition you require on the enquiry and we will confirm it against the table before quoting.

### How do I request a quotation?

Use the technical drawing on this page to pick the exact configuration, then submit it with the quote form. We respond within one business day.
