# GB T 901 Stud / Threaded Rod Specification

Bolts · ISO / DIN

Dimensional table, tolerance classes and the DIN / ISO / ASME parts that supersede or match this standard.

GB T 901 specifies the dimensions and tolerances for stud / threaded rod. The full dimensional table is reproduced below, followed by the DIN, ISO and ASME parts that match or supersede it.

- **Standard:** GB T 901
- **Product:** Stud / Threaded Rod — ISO / DIN (Series 154)
- **Governing standards:** ISO / DIN

Equivalence between national standards is dimensional, not always metallurgical. Check the property class separately when substituting.

![GB T 901 Stud / Threaded Rod Specification reference image](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Stud-Threaded-Rod-—-ISO-DIN-Series-154-—-ISO-DIN.webp)

GB T 901 is the governing dimensional standard for stud / threaded rod. This page sets out the scope of the standard, reproduces the full size table it specifies, and lists the DIN/ISO/ASME cross-references commonly cited in datasheets and drawings.

## GB T 901 — Scope

GB T 901 is "Double end studs — Metal end 1.25 d". GB/T 901 is the Chinese national adoption of the same document.

Material, property class, surface finish and packaging are governed by separate documents — ISO 898-1 and ISO 898-2 for mechanical property classes, ISO 4042 for electroplated finishes.

## Tolerance & Product Grades

GB T 901 does not divide stud / threaded rod — iso / din (series 154) into product grades. Tolerances are given as limits on the individual dimensions in the table.

Where a general-tolerance class is cited on the drawing instead, it applies to the dimensions not otherwise toleranced.

## Dimensions Specified by GB T 901

| M36 | 4.0 | 280 | 54 | Cl. 8.8 alloy steel | DIN 939 / GB/T 901 |

## Equivalent Standards

Where direct equivalents exist (ISO ↔ DIN, ISO ↔ ASME), they are listed on the parent Stud / Threaded Rod — ISO / DIN (Series 154) page.

Always confirm against the dimensions on this page, since some "equivalent" standards differ in tolerances and head geometry.

## Companion Standards

GB T 901 controls only the geometry of stud / threaded rod — iso / din (series 154). The mechanical strength is set by ISO 898-1 (bolts, screws and studs) or ISO 898-2 (nuts); the surface finish is governed by separate finish standards such as ISO 4042 for electroplating. For corrosion testing, the relevant document is ISO 9227 (neutral salt spray).

Custom manufacturing · Made to drawing

## Need a bolt to this standard in a non-standard size?

Parts built to GB T 901 are already in the catalog, so a special is usually a variation on existing tooling rather than a new design — which is what keeps the cost down. Made by cold heading or hot forging.

Minimum order from 2,000 pieces; samples within 7 days of drawing approval.

## Applications & Industries

Where Stud / Threaded Rod are used, and what decides the specification in each case. Stocked from M6 to M36.

### Industries that specify Stud / Threaded Rod

- **Pressure equipment & flanges:** Studs and nuts on flanged joints, where both ends are tightened and the assembly is inspected.
- **Plant & machine installation:** Anchoring and levelling machines onto bases and frames.
- **Steel fabrication:** Hanger rods, tie rods and made-to-length threaded assemblies.
- **Building services:** Threaded rod suspension for tray, duct and pipework.

### Typical applications

- suspending services from a soffit on threaded rod
- made-to-length assemblies cut and threaded on site
- clamping a joint from both ends where a headed bolt will not fit

### Service conditions to specify against

- **Marine and coastal:** Available in A4 (316) stainless for chloride exposure — coastal structures, pool halls, water treatment and deck hardware, where A2 will eventually pit.
- **High load:** Supplied in ISO 898-1 property classes, so the joint can be designed to a stated proof load and tightened to a calculated torque rather than by feel.

### Where to use something else

- Not for a joint that must be tightened from one side only — there is no head to hold.

Inside the plant

## Manufactured in our own plant

This part is cold-formed, threaded, heat-treated and finished in-house. The stages below are where its class and finish are actually decided.

1. ![Wire rod feeding into a cold heading machine](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/09-wire-rod-feed-cold-heading-machine.webp) 01 **Cold heading** Wire rod is drawn to size and cold-formed into blanks. Forming rather than cutting keeps the grain flow continuous around the head, which is where a bolt is most likely to fail. Head dimensions and under-head radius checked at set-up and per shift.
2. ![Thread rolling machine producing bolt threads](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/03-thread-rolling-machine-bolt-production.webp) 02 **Thread rolling** Threads are rolled between hardened dies rather than cut. Rolled threads are stronger in fatigue than cut threads and hold pitch and flank angle far more consistently across a batch. Go / no-go ring gauges to ISO 965 tolerance class 6g.
3. ![Baskets of bolts staged for heat treatment](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/05-heat-treatment-baskets-black-bolts.webp) 03 **Heat treatment** Quench-and-temper brings carbon and alloy steel to the property class ordered — 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9 — with the furnace charge tracked so a finished lot can be traced back to it. Core hardness and tensile tested per lot to ISO 898-1.
4. ![Zinc plated bolts in a treatment basket](https://engineeringhardware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/23-zinc-plated-bolts-treatment-basket.webp) 04 **Surface treatment** Zinc, zinc-nickel, hot-dip galvanizing, black oxide, phosphate and Dacromet, selected against the service environment rather than against the price list. Coating thickness and neutral salt spray hours to ISO 9227.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is GB T 901?

GB T 901 is "Double end studs — Metal end 1.25 d". GB/T 901 is the Chinese national adoption of the same document.

### What does GB T 901 specify for Stud / Threaded Rod — ISO / DIN (Series 154)?

GB T 901 specifies the dimensions and tolerances of stud / threaded rod — iso / din (series 154). Material and property class are governed by separate documents.

### Does GB T 901 specify the mechanical strength?

No. GB T 901 controls only the geometry of stud / threaded rod — iso / din (series 154). The mechanical strength is set by ISO 898-1 (bolts, screws and studs) or ISO 898-2 (nuts), and the finish by separate documents.

### Can I substitute GB T 901 for the corresponding DIN standard on a drawing?

On modern drawings the ISO standard is the master reference; the older DIN equivalent is a cross-reference. For most dimensional purposes the parts are interchangeable, but check tolerance grades and the head height — these are the most common points of divergence.

### How do I request a quotation?

Use the technical drawing on this page to pick the exact configuration, then submit it with the quote form. We respond within one business day.
