ISO 14580 Hexalobular Socket Cheese Head Screws Specification

Dimensional table, tolerance classes and the DIN / ISO / ASME parts that supersede or match this standard.

ISO 14580 specifies the dimensions and tolerances for hexalobular socket cheese head screws. The full dimensional table is reproduced below, followed by the DIN, ISO and ASME parts that match or supersede it.

Specification summary of ISO 14580 as applied to hexalobular socket cheese head screws: the dimensions the standard controls, the full specified size range, and the equivalent DIN/ISO/ASME designations.

ISO 14580 — Scope

ISO 14580 is "Hexalobular socket cheese head screws".

Material, property class, surface finish and packaging are governed by separate documents — ISO 898-1 and ISO 898-2 for mechanical property classes, ISO 4042 for electroplated finishes.

Tolerance & Product Grades

ISO 14580 does not divide hexalobular socket cheese head screws into product grades. Tolerances are given as limits on the individual dimensions in the table.

Where a general-tolerance class is cited on the drawing instead, it applies to the dimensions not otherwise toleranced.

Companion Standards

ISO 14580 controls only the geometry of hexalobular socket cheese head screws. The mechanical strength is set by ISO 898-1 (bolts, screws and studs) or ISO 898-2 (nuts); the surface finish is governed by separate finish standards such as ISO 4042 for electroplating. For corrosion testing, the relevant document is ISO 9227 (neutral salt spray).

When to Specify ISO 14580

Choose ISO 14580 for international engineering work and OEM supply where ISO standards are the contractual reference. It is the default modern specification for hexalobular socket cheese head screws.

Custom manufacturing · Made to drawing

Need a screw to this standard in a non-standard size?

Parts built to ISO 14580 are already in the catalog, so a special is usually a variation on existing tooling rather than a new design — which is what keeps the cost down. Made by cold heading or warm forging.

Minimum order from 2,000 pieces; samples within 7 days of drawing approval.

Applications & Industries

Where Hexalobular Socket Cheese Head Screws are used, and what decides the specification in each case. Stocked from M1.6 to M10.

Industries that specify Hexalobular Socket Cheese Head Screws

  • Control cabinets terminal rails and mounting plates.
  • Instrument housings low heads under covers and labels.
  • Consumer appliances assembly-line screws with high drive torque.
  • Light machinery guards and brackets with shallow counterbores.
  • Maintenance & MRO Stocked replacements matched to an existing property class, thread and finish.
  • Food, pharma & cleanroom Stainless assemblies that are washed down, where the finish matters as much as the strength.

Typical applications

  • replacing slotted cheese heads that cam out
  • fitting under a cover with little head room
  • driving quickly with power tools
  • keeping one bit across mixed head styles
  • clamping two machined faces to a calculated preload
  • bolting brackets, motors and gearboxes to a frame

Service conditions to specify against

Marine and coastal
Available in A4 (316) stainless for chloride exposure — coastal structures, pool halls, water treatment and deck hardware, where A2 will eventually pit.
High load
Supplied in ISO 898-1 property classes, so the joint can be designed to a stated proof load and tightened to a calculated torque rather than by feel.
Torque and preload
The joint is designed around bolt tension, so lubrication, coating and the friction coefficient all change the torque figure — state them together.

Where to use something else

  • Do not use a cheese head where the load must be spread on soft plastic; add a washer or choose a pan head.
  • Do not use a machine thread into unthreaded sheet or timber; use a tapping screw, rivet nut or insert made for that parent material.

Inside the plant

Manufactured in our own plant

This part is cold-formed, threaded, heat-treated and finished in-house. The stages below are where its class and finish are actually decided.

  1. Wire rod feeding into a cold heading machine
    01

    Cold heading

Wire rod is drawn to size and cold-formed into blanks. Forming rather than cutting keeps the grain flow continuous around the head, which is where a bolt is most likely to fail.

Head dimensions and under-head radius checked at set-up and per shift.

  2. Thread rolling machine producing bolt threads
    02

    Thread rolling

Threads are rolled between hardened dies rather than cut. Rolled threads are stronger in fatigue than cut threads and hold pitch and flank angle far more consistently across a batch.

Go / no-go ring gauges to ISO 965 tolerance class 6g.

  3. Baskets of bolts staged for heat treatment
    03

    Heat treatment

Quench-and-temper brings carbon and alloy steel to the property class ordered — 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9 — with the furnace charge tracked so a finished lot can be traced back to it.

Core hardness and tensile tested per lot to ISO 898-1.

  4. Zinc plated bolts in a treatment basket
    04

    Surface treatment

Zinc, zinc-nickel, hot-dip galvanizing, black oxide, phosphate and Dacromet, selected against the service environment rather than against the price list.

Coating thickness and neutral salt spray hours to ISO 9227.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I substitute ISO 14580 for the corresponding DIN standard on a drawing?

On modern drawings the ISO standard is the master reference; the older DIN equivalent is a cross-reference. For most dimensional purposes the parts are interchangeable, but check tolerance grades and the head height — these are the most common points of divergence.

Which edition of ISO 14580 does this table follow?

The table reproduces the dimensions we supply hexalobular socket cheese head screws to. We do not publish an edition year against it, so where the edition is contractually significant, cite the edition you require on the enquiry and we will confirm it against the table before quoting.

What is ISO 14580?

ISO 14580 is "Hexalobular socket cheese head screws".

What does ISO 14580 specify for Hexalobular Socket Cheese Head Screws?

ISO 14580 specifies the dimensions and tolerances of hexalobular socket cheese head screws. Material and property class are governed by separate documents.

How do I request a quotation?

Use the technical drawing on this page to pick the exact configuration, then submit it with the quote form. We respond within one business day.
